Making Participation Work – wider engagement of disabled children and young people

Members of the FLARE group discuss issues which are important to them.

The Council for Disabled Children and KIDS is committed to including the voice of children and young people throughout the Making Participation Work programme. We do this in a number of ways including face to face meetings, surveys, social media campaigns and consultations.

We know that children and young people want a range of ways to have their say and we understand the need to be flexible and creative in supporting children and young people to be heard and to meaningfully engage. Below are some suggestions for how children and young people can, either individually or within organised groups, share their views with us.

The alternative models of participation in our project

1. Virtual sessions

  • These sessions would focus on specific topics or issues that DfE want young people’s views on
  • Sessions via Skype/Facetime could be arranged in advance for direct engagement with existing groups of young people who are working on similar issues
  • Topics and issues would be fixed by sessions can be adapted to suit the needs of the young people taking part
  • Additional discussions can take place ‘off-screen’ as necessary and an evaluation sheet can be designed for gatekeepers to record evidence and young people’s feedback
2. Group space on a national group
  • Our FLARE young people’s group has unique experiences of support and service delivery
  • The group would not attend meetings but would be supported by their group coordinator to share their views on the issues discussed at the national meeting
  • CDC will set the questions to be discussed and give a deadline for responses
  • Evidence and feedback from participating groups would be sent to CDC and views will be included with notes and actions arising from national group meetings
3. Social media campaigns
  • Week-long campaigns via Twitter and Facebook that encourage young people to share and discuss issues which affect their support
  • Issues will be finalised by CDC based on discussions at national group meetings and from feedback at virtual meetings
  • Suggested posts will be created for young people who feel less confident starting online engagement and conversations
  • Whilst the campaign issues will be set by CDC and the young people from the national group, the material generated by young people independent of the group will reflect their own voices, views and experiences.
