Written by Patient Experience NetworkDate 02 Mar 2015

Guidance on how to improve the patient experience when there are a complexity of needs and variables that influence how positive a patient’s experience is. This document gives guidance on the following areas:

  1. Identifying vulnerable groups/those most at risk of poorer experiences of care e.g. children and
  2. young people from Black and Minority Ethnic Communities, those with complex needs/learning
  3. disabilities, those who are looked after
  4. Gathering and acting upon evidence
  5. Designing services and pathways
  6. Tendering for services
  7. Creating incentives for improvement

The purpose of focusing on patient experience is to allow Commissioners to challenge themselves to involve children, young people and families in the commissioning cycle so that services reflect the needs of local people (Health and Social Care Act 2012).
