Letter from the Department for Education on establishing a SEND Leadership Board

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Children and Families, Nadhim Zahawi, has written to CDC Director, Dame Christine Lenehan in relation to establishing a new Leadership Board for SEND. Christine's 2018 national review, 'Good Intentions, Good Enough?' recommended that a Leadership Board be established, to improve the commissioning and delivery of services for children and young people with SEND, and to improve outcomes.

The Department for Education have consulted with the Association of Directors of Children's Services, the Local Government Association, and NHS England, to establish the remit of the Leadership Board. The Board will:

  • Clarify and communicate the principles which should underpin all SEND commissioning and the good outcomes we are seeking to
achieve for children and young people with SEND.
  • Encourage improved joint working, commissioning and planning by and between education, health and social care partners.
  • Identify where partners can better share data, insight, guidance, good practice and peer support to help encourage improved commissioning
and planning, working to alleviate the long-term high needs budget pressures.

The first meeting of the Board is anticipated for spring 2019, with termly meetings anticipated.
