Governance

Note: The Independent Support programme was a government funded initiative aimed to support parents with children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) during the transition to a new system of assessment and support, which came into force September 2014. The programme has been a time limited initiative and will finish on 31st July 2018.

The Council for Disabled Children is responsible for national delivery of the Independent Support programme on behalf of the Department for Education.

Independent Support Advisory Board

Independent Support reports to the Department for Education and is governed by the Independent Support Programme Board. The Board review progress across the different programme strands.

The remit of the Advisory Board is to:       
  • offer advice, experience, and information to support the delivery of Independent Support
  • provide recommendations to support the operation of Independent Support
  • provide vision, advice and support on the direction of travel for the future programme of Independent Support
  • promote Independent Support through sector wide communications activities 
  • help identify priorities through effective group discussions
  • help identify risks and mitigation action
  • maintain a broad overview of contract and financial performance, and if necessary, make recommendations to the NCB Finance Risk and Audit Committee, who hold responsibility for detailed monitoring of contract and financial performance
  • oversee, in co-operation with the DfE, independent evaluation of the programme
