Dame Christine Lenehan, Director of the Council for Disabled Children, reacts to the announcement of a review of exclusions.
Dame Christine Lenehan, Director of the Council for Disabled Children, said:
‘We were very pleased to read the interview with Damien Hinds in the Sunday Times and his statement that pupils should only be expelled as a last resort. We welcome the proposed exclusions review and its leadership by Edward Timpson and look forward to seeing the full terms of reference. The article points out that children with special educational needs are four times more likely to be permanently excluded than other children. Children with SEN are entitled to a full education and for their progress and achievements to be recognised and celebrated. We want the review to get to the bottom of the disproportionate representation of those with SEND in exclusions data and to propose practical actions to address it. We look forward to working with the review as it progresses.’
