Respect people’s opinions to build their self-esteem

This week's guest blogger is Alisha from the FLARE group.

Everyone has the right to be respected.
No matter who they are or where they come from, they are still human and they should be treated with dignity and respect as stated in Articles 1 and 2 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

As a young person with autism, I have had people in my life that have not respected me in many ways, like not valuing my opinion or not considering my needs. This can make people feel like their opinion is not valued or respected, and can affect people’s confidence and self-esteem because you are making the person feel less valued than everyone else.

Everybody has an opinion no matter who they are or where they come from, and they still have the right to be respected and valued for that opinion. Article 12 of Convention on the Rights of the Child says that children and young people have the human right to have opinions and for these opinions to be taken seriously.

If people’s opinions are valued and respected, their confidence and self-esteem will become stronger because they will feel like they are being listened to. Having your opinion valued can also help with independence because the person will feel that they can go somewhere new and know that they have important things to say.

If everybody respected each other's needs and opinions it would make everyone’s life so much easier. When people don’t respect the needs and ideas of others, it’s not always because they are ignoring them on purpose. It could be because they don’t know that person well, or they don’t understand them. I think that this issue could be minimised by putting training out there for children and young people but also adults to help people understand them and have more respect for their opinion

And just remember, the way you do things is not always the only way. Respect that people have their own way of thinking, just like:
6+3=9
But so does 4+5

It does not mean that one person is wrong it is just that the other person has a different way of thinking and it is a good thing because it means that people can come up with more than one way to solve problems and also one person could have a more effective idea on how to solve the problem

Someone once told me :if you respect somebody they will have respect for you and if everybody respects each other the world will be a happier place.
