Government announce new Minister for Children, Families and Wellbeing

On Thursday 31 August 2023, the government announced David Johnston OBE MP as the new Minister for Children, Families and Wellbeing. Minister Johnston will be replacing Claire Coutinho. This announcement comes as Claire Coutinho has been promoted to Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero.

What does this mean for the SEND and Alternative Provision Improvement Plan?

SEND and Alternative Provision both fall within David Johnston’s remit as Minister for Children, Families and Wellbeing. The Department for Education will continue to work with ministers to implement the SEND and Alternative Provision Improvement Plan, along with continued engagement with the system, to inform the next stage of delivering improvements for children, young people and their families.

“We look forward to working with David Johnston as he comes in as the seventh minister overseeing the SEND reforms. He joins at a critical time as the Change programme begins and his commitment and energy to support its goals are going to be key to success".
