This workshop has been tailored to be more specifically aimed at parents and carers of children and young people with Learning Disabilities (LD) and/or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) which includes challenging behaviour. This is not however, a workshop that will be dealing with diagnosis, specific behaviours, behavioural plans or management strategies.
The aim of the workshop is to gain a better understanding of how the health system works, and how effective engagement with providers might help improve outcomes for disabled children and young people. It is not a parenting course, nor is it a workshop to turn us all into experts at being parents! But rather, it is based on the core principle that as parent carers we are experts about our own child and to get the best for our children we need the mix of our own expertise along with that of professional experts.
The workshop is part of a wider information and learning programme that is web based and collates new and existing information about health from a national perspective. The Expert Parent Carer Programme website pages provide:
- Information in an accessible format wherever possible
- A glossary of terms
- System navigation information and tools
- E-learning modules
- Handouts, additional information and resources to support the workshop activities
