I CAN

I CAN is the leading charity for children and young people’s speech, language and communication.  They provide effective, practical evidence-based solutions that change the lives of children and young people with communication difficulties and support all children’s communication development.

Intervention, programmes and training
Supporting children’s speech, language and communication is key to children’s learning. I CAN give staff in early years settings and schools the tools and training to help children and young people at every stage of their learning from 0-19. This means professionals can better identify and support children and young people who are struggling to communicate. I CAN’s network of Licensees, skilled professionals who are trained in their programmes and meet quality standards, enable them to support many more children and young people with SLCN.

Family support and information
Parents or professionals concerned about a child’s speech, language and communication can talk to or email one of I CAN’s speech and language therapist through the I CAN Help Enquiry Service.

Talking Point
I CAN host and manage the Talking Point website, where parents and practitioners can find what they need to know about supporting children’s speech and language development.

Resources and publications
I CAN produce a range of educational and practical resources for professionals and parents to help children’s speaking, listening and understanding. Additionally, I CAN Talk papers summarise research and evidence in key areas of children’s speech, language and communication.

Schools
Children with the most severe and complex speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) benefit directly from I CAN’s help through our two ‘outstanding’ specialist schools. Meath and Dawn House Schools are centres of excellence, providing high quality care, education and therapy to help children and young people aged 4-19 fulfil their potential.
