The Early Intervention Project was delivered by the British Dyslexia Association in partnership with Dyslexia Action and Springboard for Children.
The project aimed to take the original design of their Sound Check project to further by exploring the effectiveness of training teachers and teaching assistants to deliver the Sound Check intervention.
They also piloted a 3 tier certification framework to provide a graduated route towards a whole school policy for supporting children with literacy difficulties. The framework, comprising Bronze, Silver and Gold levels, encourages, recognizes and celebrates best practice, enabling schools to deliver high quality provision and effective interventions.
43 schools across England took part in the project:
- 3 schools receiving training in an Early Years pilot;
- 6 schools in Hull/Scarborough receiving the Sound Check intervention and training to lead to Bronze Level certification;
- 15 further Bronze Level schools;
- 16 Silver Level schools;
- 3 Gold Level schools, 1 each in Manchester, Leeds and Swindon.
The project generated a series of useful resources for parents and teachers including:
- Early years training presentations
- Literacy Leap framework criteria
- Volunteer management manual for schools
- How to build an identification toolkit
